I would like to take this chance to welcome everyone back for a new school year, and especially welcome all of you to
GRADES Grades will be kept as a running tally of points, and your marking period grades will be calculated by taking your total points earned divided by the maximum points available. These points are earned through various activities such as class work, homework, quizzes, projects, and tests. Your numeric grade will then be transferred into a letter grade using the following system: 100 and above = A+ 90’s = A 80’s = B grades ending in 8, or 9 will earn a + 70’s = C 60’s = D grades ending in 0, 1, or 2 will earn a - Below 60 = F CLASS WORK Every student is expected to participate in some way in my class, and I plan to create a classroom environment that makes it fun and enjoyable for everyone to do just that. Everyday you will be asked to complete a “bell ringer” warm-up activity (as I call it), that usually draws on material learned in past lessons. I will give you special paper to complete this bell ringer on, and at the end of the week I will collect the students’ work. Each day of completion is worth 1 point, so there is an opportunity for you to earn 5 points per week toward your marking period grade. All work must be shown to earn full credit for completion. You are however responsible for your bell ringer papers and for making them up when you are absent. I advise you to keep a 3-ring binder to put your papers in so that you do not lose them. These can be a great tool for studying. HOMEWORK Completing independent practice at home is a vital part of the learning process in all of mathematics, and it is an amazing resource for students to study and review. Homework will be given almost every day in my class, however, it is a great way for you to practice new concepts, get prepared for quizzes and tests, and earn important points toward your class grade. My practice is usually to count each homework assignment on a 4 point scale, and grade on how thoroughly you complete the assignment. I reserve the right though to count certain homework assignments more or less than others depending on difficulty. Late homework will be worth half credit if it is one day late, and I will award no credit after one day. In the case of an absence, students have one day to complete missed homework assignments for full credit. In the case of multiple absences, you will have one day for each assignment that you missed. (Ex. If a student misses Monday and Tuesday and comes back on Wednesday, Monday’s homework will be due Thursday, and Tuesday’s homework will be due Friday. Wednesday’s homework will be due as scheduled.) Any special situations will be handled at my discretion. QUIZZES Quizzes will be given throughout the chapters as checkpoints for me to see how well you are progressing. Once again, the point scale may vary, however I usually count quizzes between 20-50 points. Also, quizzes can be given expectedly or unexpectedly, so you should always come to class prepared. PROJECTS Throughout the school year, I will be asking you to complete various projects that tie in with the math curriculum. Hopefully most of these projects will be fun and challenging, and they will give you a chance to get “hands on” with some of the math topics. The amount of points a project is worth will depend on the variety of requirements involved in completing it. TESTS Like any other subject, testing is very important to gauge student progress in mathematics. Tests will be administered at least one time for each chapter, and 4 times throughout the year for district purposes. Each test will be worth 100 points; however, once again, the point scale may vary at my discretion. MATERIALS Students are expected to come to class everyday prepared and ready to learn. This means they must always come to my class with the following materials:
In conclusion, I would like to add that cell phones, gum chewing, and bad attitudes are not permitted in my room. Every student is required to come into my classroom everyday ready to have fun learning math and also have respect for myself and all classmates. I will do everything in my powers to make this a productive and enjoyable school year, but I do need your help. As I said before, I cannot wait to start this brand new school year and get a chance to work with all of you. I am going to work as hard as I can to make this school year great, and I expect all of you to do the same. My expectations for every one of my students are incredibly high, so get ready to work, learn math, and have some fun!
