Council Rock School District

Our class studied the Sprite/NBA 2006 Slam Dunk Contest video/audio footage.  They watched again and again - and listened.  Each writer recorded the sounds, words and images they noticed into a long list.  Then each writer attempted to make a poem (free verse).  One writer (Michael Trivelis) wrote a rap song!!  Then the writers learned about prepositions (like: in, among, over, between and under!).  Then each writer had to try to take what they had written (the list and the poem) and turn it into a (or craft a new) poem.  Their work and comments appear below.

Author’s note

It all started out with just a notebook, a pencil and us.  Mr. Murphy found a video of the Slam Dunk contest.  He told us to write down stuff that we noticed and heard.  After that we wrote poems about them.  First we wrote poems in our notebook then we made it better on the computer. After, Mr. Murphy told us how to do prepositions.  Using our poems we wrote, we made preposition poems.  In the preposition poem I used a craft called a simile.  The sentence was “Like a bird in the sky”.

Author's note:

At first I listed words that I heard and then stuff I saw. Then Mr. Murphy told me to put in prepositions. They helped me to make it better. After I used prepositions I got the piece above.

Author’s Note

This piece is a follow-up on the same poem. Except in this poem, I added prepositions. We watched a clip of a dunk from this year's NBA dunk contest. The two main contestants were Andre Iguodala and Nate Robinson. We watched two of their main dunks. First, was Andre’s. Allen Iverson helped him by throwing it off the back off the backboard. Andre came from the crowd, took the ball, ducked, and threw it home cleanly through the net. We had to listen for sounds like: Ohhhhhhhh, a perfect 50 and that’s heavy etc. Then we wrote a first draft in our writer’s notebooks. Then we typed it. Then we turned it into a preposition poem. I had a lot of fun because I had never learned prepositions before!
