This is a great place to find valuable information about our LMC, where I'm proud to say, I am one of North's Librarians and have been for almost twenty years!! I spend many hours at the reference desk in the library at North and am always happy to help our students with their information needs. Away from school, I spend time with my family and our puppy. She has endless amounts of energy so I get plenty of exercise. Which is a good thing, since exercise is one of my major interests. But, like most librarians, I love to read, read, read. If you are like me, you might want to search our library catalog to find a good book in which to get lost. We just received some new books to start the school year on the right note. Right now, I am interested in what took place in Los Angeles, after the Rodney King Trial. If you search through our catalog, you will see that we have fiction and non-fiction books on this topic, even a picture book, called Smoky Night, by Eve Bunting. If you would like to learn more about this event, try our online subscription to U.S. History In Context , and search the keyword- Rodney King or Los Angeles Riots and 1992 There are reference, as well as magazine articles, and even some primary sources on this notorious place. The Library of Congress also has primary resources. Can you find a political cartoon about this event?
Biography in Context is another database that I find useful. In fact, there are articles about some of the major villains and heroes in American history-from presidents, to ball players, to authors. If you are interested in what was happening on the day of your birth, checkout ProQuest Historical Newspapers. There is a search box on the top, right side of the page that allows you to search a date and find news articles published that day. Discovery Education a multimedia database might even provide you with a documentary on the Rodney King riots or another event in history that is interesting to you.
The library is the place for to put you in touch with history, find a good book, or information for a major paper, or for a hobby or special interest. For example, don't be afraid to ask for some guidance to put your fingers on the right resources for your assignment and how to correctly cite that resource. Finally, if you are wondering whether the resources that you are using are legitimate, and not from the imagination of a sassy six year old, use the questions on our Web Evaluation to prove its worth!Happy Researching!
