• Choosing Appropriate Independent Reading Books

At Goodnoe Elementary, we encourage students to practice the reading strategies learned in class while reading their own independent book choices.  Sometimes choosing a book from the vast number of titles available today can be challenging to children and adults alike.

For reading growth to occur, students must practice reading at appropriate reading levels.  If a reader attempts to read at a level too challenging for that particular time in his/her development, the practice could indeed be counterproductive.  The websites listed below are to be used as  loose determinations of whether the book your child has chosen is appropriate.  Of course, the reading level is not to be the only consideration.  Interest and familiarity with the topic could enhance the student's readability and should also be taken into account when selecting a good book choice.
