• Social Studies
     
    Our curriculum focuses on the community: a group of people who live, work, and have fun in the same place.
     
    We begin the year with a discussion of people and places in our community. The children will look at the location of our community on a map and begin map study, examining the important parts of a map, using different maps, and finally, creating their own map.
     
    Children will create create a map of an imaginary island that will include a title, a compass rose, symbols, and a key.
     
    At the beginning of March we will learn about Alaska and follow the Iditarod, a sled-dog race that commemorates the brave mushers and sled dogs who raced to bring life-saving medicine to save the town of Nome in 1925.
     
    We will also visit the seven continents and explore various geographical features, the climate, and countries of each continent.
