Overview of AP Biology:
This course is designed to offer students a solid foundation in introductory college-level biology. AP Biology will contribute to the development of the students’ ability to think clearly and to express their ideas orally and in writing, with emphasis on integrating inquiry, reasoning, and quantitative skills. Students will design and master plans for data collection and analysis, apply mathematical routines, and also connect concepts across four primary domains of science. The content is framed around “Four Big Ideas” which encompass core scientific principles, theories and processes governing living organisms and biological systems. The four big ideas include:
Big Idea 1: Evolution: The process of evolution drives the diversity and unity of life.
Big Idea 2: Cellular Processes: Biological systems utilize free energy and molecular building blocks to grow, to reproduce and to maintain dynamic homeostasis.
Big Idea 3: Genetics and Information Transfer: Living systems store, retrieve, transmit and respond to information essential to life processes.
Big Idea 4: Ecology: Biological systems interact, and these systems and their interactions possess complex properties.
