¡ Bienvenidos a la clase de español 1 .This year you will begin your study of the Spanish language by learning new vocabulary and grammatical structures. You will increase your skill level en español, in the areas of listening, speaking, reading andwriting. This will be accomplished by escuchando (a major element in foreign language acquisition), COMPLETING ALL TAREA (which will be assigned EVERY night), and ESTUDIANDO todos los días…..claro qué sí JJ
SUPPLIES: Come to class prepared everyday. Your readiness is part of your participation grade.
TEXTBOOK = AVANCEMOS 1
Textbooks will be used in class. Each student will be assigned a book for which he/she will be responsible. The books will remain in the classroom. You will have an online access code and be able to use the online version of the book at home. This version is EXACTLY the same as the print version and it is a great way to have the book without carrying it back and forth to class/home.
- Notebook or Binder and Folder ( for Spanish only) …
- Pens or pencils
- Flashcards (Fichas)..3 packs to start, size 3x5 ..Do NOT bring to class blank*
- Loose leaf ring..any size..best way for “holding” fichas..or any other method of keeping them
*You will be making fichas at home for homework grades ( notas de tarea). They should be hole punched/or bound.
Please be aware of the ten-day absence rule. If you are absent more than 10 days without a medical excuse, your credit may be denied. Be sure to read (leer) your student HANDBOOK carefully. YOU are responsible for making up missed work. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to find out any missed homework / class notes from a class partner (pareja) or friend (amigo/a) or from Sra. Pezzicara. Daily homework assignments must be made up within 1 day of your return to school, unless there are extenuating circumstances. You havethe same amount of days to make up work as your absence…same applies to make up quizzes, tests. If you are absent ONLY the day before a quiz/test and return to school the day of the quiz/test; you will be expected to take the assessment with the class.
LATENESS TO CLASS
You are expected to be in class and ready for instruction when the bell rings! If you are late, you MUST have valid, signed note. Lateness will result in a teacher detention, parental contact, then office referrals.
PASSES I will not give out restroom/bathroom passes (los servicios/el baño) passes during class except in the case of an emergency. Please use the servicios on your way to class.

As per the Student Handbook, cell phones are to be TURNED OFF and put away in your book bags during school. If, I see you texting/using your phone, there is NO WARNING...the phone will be taken and be given to your grade level principal with an office referral. You will collect your phone (and detention) at the grade level principal’s office at the end of the school day.

ASESSMENT & GRADES ( NOTAS)
Remember that you are in Spanish class. You should therefore respond to questions and use Spanish as much as possible during most of the class. The more little words and eventually phrases and sentences you use in Spanish, the better and faster you will learn the language and earn more participation points.
CLASS PARTICIPATION* = 30%
- A (90-100%): Student is consistently attentive, respectful, and prepared for class. Student participates enthusiastically. Student always uses as much español as possible.
- B (80-89%): Student is usually attentive, respectful, and prepared for class. Usually uses as much Spanish as possible.
• C (70-79%): Student is at times passive and inattentive in class. Contributions are minimal. Student may be prepared, but does not volunteer even at a basic level.
• D (60-69%): Student is passive and /or inattentive more than 50% of the time. Student rarely volunteers for even basic participation
• F (below 60%): Student is always passive and inattentive. Student never participates in any activities of the class.
TESTS, QUIZZES & PROJECTS = 50%
There will be 2-3 quizzes and 1 test per chapter (lección). Quizzes may be written, oral or listening. They may be announced or unannounced!! J Sorpresas JThere will be 1 project per marking period. Projects will vary and be done solo as well as with parejas.
HOMEWORK ( LA TAREA ) = 20%
Homework is a course requirement. You MUST complete yourhomework every night in order to review what has been taught in class. Homework is more than “filling in the blanks”…you must constantly review. NO LATE HOMEWORK WILL BE ACCEPTED FOR CREDIT. HOMEWORK MUST BE COMPETE… THERE IS NO PARTIAL CREDIT.
Some homework will be assigned which you will do at home on your computer with the Online program. These assignments will have a 3-4 day due date, therefore NO EXCUSES regarding e-mail attachment/computer/printer/ malfunctions will be accepted. Plan ahead and do not wait until the last minute to do the computer assigned homework. We will learn how to do these assignments in class with detailed instruction.

This grading scale will be followed. There will be no “rounding” of grades. Please do not ask……
98% - 100% A+ 88% - 89% B+ 78% - 79% C+ 68% - 69% D+
93% - 97 % A 83% - 87% B 73% - 77% C 63% - 67% D
90% - 92 % A- 80% - 82% B- 70% - 72% C- 60% - 62% D-
There is no extra credit offered in this course. If you doall of your work to the best of your ability, study, and participate in class….you WILL be successful!
Anyone caught cheating or plagiarizing/using internet translators…. will receive an automatic zero for that assignment or assessment. I will notify administration, guidance and a parent of the incident.
I will be available for extra help during clinic times, los martes y los jueves, después de school until ( hasta ) !!!! 3:00 pm. If these days do not work for you, see me so that we can set up a mutually convenient time.
I will accommodate later times for clinic IF you have a pass from another teacher that you had to see prior to Spanish clinic...otherwise, clinic begins at 2:20 and ends at 3:00 pm.
IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU RECEIVE HELP BEFORE MOVING ON TO THE NEXT CONCEPT! PLEASE ASK QUESTIONS IN CLASS AND COME TO CLINIC. DO NOT ALLOW YOURSELF TO FALL BEHIND.
Free student tutoring is also available through National Honor Society (NHS). Check when the start date is. Time is Thursdays from 7-9 pm. in the biblioteca here at South! You can also request a tutor from Spanish Honor Society ( Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica). There are many resources available!
