    Grades 3-4-5-6

Kate Klise our first star this year will be flying in from the Missouri Ozarks to talk about her award winning children's books and how writing has influenced her and changed her life around. She has worked as a reporter for over 15 years at People Magazine covering everything from celebrities to music to crime to sports. Between writing for the magazine she continued to work on children's books and finally had one published in 1998 and illustrated by her sister, Sarah, titled: REGARDING THE FOUNTAIN. This is one of the more than 25 books over 35 years that she and her sister Sarah have collaborated on many of which feature a strong female character.
While she visits us she'll share how she got started writing books, the secret recipe for storytelling, her early failures as a writer, and how she discovered what makes a good story.
Check out Kate Klise Story Circle.

"The images in a picture book are the driving forces that tell the story. The words tell only what the pictures can't." Dan Yaccarino

In March, Mr. Dan Yaccarino will be coming to our school from New York City where he lives with his wife and two children.  Dan has written and illustrated over three dozen children's books and has created and produced Nickelodeon's animated series, Oswald, as well as Willa's Wild Life and is the character designer behind Nickelodeon's The Backyardians.

Growing up in Montclair, New Jersey, Yaccarino was influenced by comic books, vintage animation, toys and old films. He graduated from Parsons School of Design in 1987. He started work as an editorial illustrator and has over the years created hundreds of illustrations for magazines, newspapers, and book covers.

Children everywhere know Yaccarino from his children's books such as his UNLOVABLEALL THE WAY TO AMERICA, THE FANTASTIC UNDERSEA LIFE OF JACQUES COUSTEAU, and  FIVE LITTLE PUMPKINS.

Through childhood drawings and photos, illustration and animation, Dan's presentation will connect the dots from his childhood to a 25 year career in children's publishing, television and character design, showing children that if they work hard enough, they can achieve anything!!

Digital technology is part of everyone's lives, especially kids. Dan presents the benefits and different ways kids can UNPLUG from digital technology through his most popular picture book, DOUG UNPLUGGED. A very timely and great message of unplugging!!!!
