• SLOAN BEHAVIOR MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

    The behavior management system is designed to encourage appropriate school behaviors and is based upon a point system.  This system works in conjunction with the discipline code and is the program’s cornerstone for a secure, structured environment for students to learn the self-discipline and social disposition to succeed in a regular school setting.

    Students earn points.  Students do not lose points; they fail to earn them.  If their academic effort or behavior is unacceptable, they achieve less than the possible number of points for a specific part of the day.  The most points you can earn in a single day are 30 points - each period of the day are worth 3 points. Students also earn three points for completing his/her weekly goal on a daily basis. Each Friday afternoon staff meets to identify an individualized goal for each student. Students are notified of this goal Monday morning when they meet with their staff mentor. Goals may be behavioral or counseling oriented. In addition to notification of the students goals on Monday morning’s students identify something or someone he/she is grateful for and on Friday afternoons students will identify someone at Sloan they need to make amends to.

    All points are determined at the end of a period and reflect a student’s performance and behavior for the entire period.  No student should expect to earn points if he/she chooses not to comply with school rules or meet the academic or behavior expectations of a staff member.  Points are maintained on a Point Sheet.

            POINTS

            26 – 27 points                              Did well

            25     points                                  Had some difficulty

      L   =  Language                                  H = Horseplay                                   AA = Assigned Area

    DA  =  Drug & Alcohol Talk                D = Disruptive                                  OT = Off-Task

      X   =  Sex Talk                                   R = Disrespect                                  SL   = Sleeping

    FD  =  Following Directions              NA = No Assignments                       LT=Late

                                                                         (Academic Work)

     IPR (Internal Program Restriction)

    A student will have IPR based on the points he/she earned the previous day.  Students will have the opportunity to earn all their points while in IPR.

    1/2 Day = Begins upon arrival to program and ends at lunch (except during group time)

    Full Day= Begins upon arrival to program and ends at Pt. Tally (including lunch – except group time)

    PR (Program Restriction)

    A student will receive PR for failure to behave appropriately either in the classroom or group setting.

    A student automatically will lose 1 point for every period in PR.  When a student is asked to leave a group or classroom, the student will earn 0 points for that time period.

    SI (Special Intervention)

    The Dean of Students and/or Counselor will initiate a “special intervention” (also referred to as social restriction) for their clients based on continued behavioral issues.  The staff will outline the expectations for each student prior to starting SI (such as timeframes, what classes or groups the student will participate in, and where a student will sit).  Students will have the opportunity to earn all their points while in SI.

    REMOVAL FROM A PROGRAM PERIOD / PROCESSING

    When a student is being disruptive, behaving inappropriately, or acting in a manner that is therapeutically or academically unproductive, the student will be redirected by staff.  If the student fails to follow redirection and the behavior continues the student will be asked to leave the area.

    The student will be given a processing sheet and will be directed to a desk in the hallway.  It is expected that the student will complete the sheet and process the incident with the staff member involved.  If at the end of the restricted time frame the student has failed to complete the sheet, the student will remain in restriction until they can process the situation.

                                                    LEVEL SYSTEM

    *Orientation Level is for new students only during their first 3 days in the program. Students will be assigned a “Peer Mentor” on their first day of treatment by either the Dean of Students or Counselor. The student is to remain with their “Peer Mentor” at all times while on Orientation Level. The “Peer Mentor” will assist each new student with transitioning into the program. If a student is suspended during the first three days – the student will move to Red. This is a framework. Level obtainment and adjustment may occur as deemed appropriate by the program staff under the supervision of the Dean of Students and/or Director of Special Services. Students will also receive a Staff Mentor upon enrollment.
