Literature – The American Experience
- Novel Units (2 to 4 novels chosen by teacher)

- 10 to 20 short stories in various genres

- 5 to 10 non-fiction pieces

- Sadlier-Oxford Vocabulary Workshop Level G
- 15 units, plus extra words for SAT prep
Grammar (including but not limited to)
- Grammar units will be concerned with SAT preparation and writing improvement

- Dangling/Misplaced Modifiers

Writing
- Writing will be ongoing throughout the school year including but not limited to –
- Expository literature based essays
- Essays relating to non-fiction topics
- One literary research paper on a short story by an American author (25% of the marking period grade)
- Personal narratives, descriptive, and persuasive pieces
- SAT preparation
- Creative writing pieces
Assessments (including but not limited to)
- Tests and quizzes
- Homework
- Projects (individual and group)
- Oral presentations
- Technology presentations
- Portfolio
- Objective and subjective writing assessments
Graduation Project
- Comparison/contrast of two short stories by the same author, or American novel/play
- 7 to 8 pages with a visual component and a presentation
R-Rated Films
- The following films are included in the course with signed parent approval
- Othello (1995 version) – Faithful adaptation of Shakespeare’s Othello used to compliment and visualize readings and analysis of the play. Rated R for violence, brief nudity in one scene.
Council Rock School District strongly encourages parents to survey the outstanding collection of challenging literature contained within our program. Much of the content presents important and complex ideas that encourage critical thinking. Any connection discussed in class is made that much stronger by the conversation and connections that are made at home. We invite you to discuss any of the elements of our courses with your child’s teacher.
