WELCOME to a New School Year !!!!!
What a wonderful treat our third graders just had and all thanks go to our neighborhood Newtown Bookshop. On Monday, September 11th two very talented authors and illustrators came to Newtown as part of a national tour to promote their new book title:
ALL THE WAY TO HAVANA. The story is about a little boy who is taking a trip with his family to Havana to meet his new baby cousin. Margarita Engle and Mike Curato shared a look into the Cuban countryside and their culture by showing the diversity and beauty of the land and people. Before their journey, the boy helps his papa tune up their old car, Cara Cara, which has been in the family for many years. They drive along the sea wall, along the coast, and past other colorful cars. A rich celebration of the culture of the Cuban people, their resourcefulness, their innovated spirit, and their joy.
Our Second Author/Illustrator of this 2017 year was Jennifer Hansen Rollie who came to our school on Monday, December 11th.
We were so excited to welcome back, Jennifer so she could show off her newest book, Claudia and Moth. We loved her first, Just One More!!!
The Claudia's story is about a little girl with a passion for nature who turns to her new passion for art as the season turns colder. Claudia loves butterflies and since she can't take them home, she paints them in all their beautiful colors. But when winter comes she finds a little moth and suddenly, Claudia sees winter in a whole new light.
Mrs. Rollie grew up in Yardley, PA where her father began teaching her to paint and she hasn't stopped since. Her books are wonderful and we are so proud to have such a talented alumni Mom back to Newtown Elementary to share her passion for art and writing books.
Jennifer has a new book:
HOW TO TRICK THE TOOTH FAIRY

BRYAN COLLIER !!!!! OH !!!! MY !!!!!
COMING -------MONDAY----MARCH 5, 2018
BRYAN is the creator of over 40+ books that have earned 6 CORETTA SCOTT KING awards, 4 CALDECOTT HONOR awards, and EZRA JACK KEATS awards among many others.
Bryan grew up in Pocomoke, Maryland, on the lower Eastern shore of the state, the youngest of 6children. His interest in art started early. "At home and at school, I was encouraged to READ. I remember the first books with pictures that I read myself were THE SNOWY DAY by Ezra Jack Keats and HAROLD AND THE PURPLE CRAYON by Crockett Johnson. I liked the stories, but I really liked the pictures. " As a teenager he began to paint the world around him- the bay, ducks, water, and marshland. His interest in ART was always encouraged both at home and at school. He began to develop a unique style of painting that incorporated both watercolors and collage. " Collage is more than just an art style. Collage is about bringing different elements together. Once you form a sensibility about connections, how different elements relate to each other, you deepen your understanding of yourself and others."
In 1989 Bryan graduated with honors from Pratt Institute with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
Today, Bryan spends his time working on his book illustrations, creating his own studio pieces, and going into classrooms to talk with teachers, librarians, and students about books and art. "I get so much from those school visits. With the books I've been doing, I have this amazing opportunity to bring my art and the process of making art work and books in the classroom. I ask the students to talk to me and to talk to each other about how they feel and what their experiences are. Basically I ask them to tell me their own story. Then I ask them to tell their own story through art. The experience of making art is all about making decisions. Once the kids really get that, you see them making the connection. They go from saying, 'That's not about me' to 'Hey, look at me. This is who I am."
