Our District

DISTRICT OVERVIEW

The Council Rock School District displays within its boundaries an intriguing blend of history and progress. Located in Bucks County , a county founded in 1682 and known for its scenic beauty and historical events, the school district is just 30 miles north of Philadelphia and only 90 minutes by automobile or train from New York City.

Of historical significance within the Council Rock School District are Washington Crossing State Park, where Washington led his troops across the ice-choked Delaware River on Christmas Day, 1776; Washington Crossing National Cemetery, Colonial Newtown, where handsome pre-Revolutionary homes are treasured; an octagonal one-room school house built in 1802 and still standing in Wrightstown Township; and several old country inns and taverns that serve area residents just as they did over one hundred years ago.

Even the school district's own name - Council Rock - originated from the past. The area's original inhabitants, the Lenni Lenape Indians, were said to have had their council rock on the summit of the cliffs towering above the Neshaminy Creek, on the site of the Bucks County Community College, located on Swamp Road, northwest of Newtown. The district covers 72 square miles and is comprised of five municipalities: Newtown Borough and the Townships of Newtown, Northampton, Upper Makefield, and Wrightstown. As of the 2010 census, the total population of the school district was approximately 73,110.    The task of educating over 11,000 students, K-12, is a large one and requires the increasing attention and devoted efforts of over 900 teachers and supervisors, as well as clerical, custodial, maintenance and cafeteria employees who support the instructional program in the fifteen schools. The school district is by far the largest employer in the area. The school district operates ten elementary schools (grades K-6), three middle schools (grades 7-8), and two high schools (grades 9-12). Council Rock is also one of four participating school districts in the Middle Bucks Area Vocational-Technical School located in Jamison, PA.

Through the regular program offerings, career awareness is first promoted at the elementary level. That awareness in heightened in the middle schools where opportunities to explore various careers are provided. The program culminates at the high schools, where students are motivated toward preparation in their chosen career.

A comprehensive system has long been established in the schools to aid our staff in determining each student's capabilities as well as identifying those students requiring remedial attention. An extensive special education program provides a variety of services to meet the needs of children identified with a disability. Services are also provided for students identified as mentally gifted. Further information regarding these services can be obtained by contacting the district Special Services Department.   Council Rock also boasts one of the most comprehensive and successful athletic and co-curricular programs to be found anywhere. Excellent facilities, quality equipment and outstanding coaching provides our students with wonderful opportunities outside of the traditional classroom.
